I wear many hats in the studio. I make hand-embroidered multimedia wall art combining traditional silk embroidery with collage, paint, and found objects. I also make quilted wall art, do fine wood marquetry, and I cast and etch glass. I find inspiration in antique medical texts, in the natural world, and in human anatomy.
Making something unusual from wood is the joy of my life. I primarily make boxes, and they are not your grandmother's jewelry boxes. Incorporating glass, bones, stone, paper, leather, fabric into my pieces helps tell a story with functional art.
Despite the fact that I was a freelance arts writer for roughly 30 years, I find it challenging to describe myself and the photographs and collages I make. My artist self and wordsmith self apparently reside in very separate cubicles in my brain.
My pictures are, first and foremost, about the formal elements of composition, color and texture. When I look at art—mine or anyone elses--I want to be dazzled by the organization of visual elements but also challenged to establish a personal relationship with the work. Art that I love engages me in a private conversation, tells me its story and encourages me to reflect on my own. It has the power to change the way I perceive the world. I hope that my own work similarly inspires viewers
